Electrical work inside Cumming city limits: the City's own permit and inspection rules
If your home or business is inside the City of Cumming, electrical work is permitted and inspected by the City's Planning and Zoning department, not Forsyth County. The City's building permit application states that separate permits are required for mechanical, electrical and plumbing work, so a building permit for a remodel does not cover the wiring. The City's electrical permit application says the work must comply with the current National Electrical Code, that all electrical work must be inspected, and that one day advance notice is required for inspections.
The application asks for the job address, the owner, the electrical contractor, the use of the building, the class of work (new, addition, remodel or repair) and a description, then prices the work line by line. The contractor must submit a copy of the current state card and business license.
The 2026 fee schedule
The table below reproduces selected residential lines from the City's 2026 electrical permit application. Service amperage is billed in bands, from $5.00 for 0 to 99 amps up to $14.00 for 400 to 499 amps, with larger services billed at $15.00 plus $0.05 per amp above 500. Appliances and equipment have their own lines, and items not listed are charged at the kilowatt or horsepower rate. A $40.00 minimum permit fee applies, so most small residential jobs are billed at the minimum.
The same application sets a low-voltage permit fee based on job cost, with a $40.00 minimum. These are City permit fees only. They are not what an electrician charges for the work, and this site does not publish contractor prices.

Requesting inspections
The City's inspection page sets out how inspections work. When you request one, you must give the building permit number, the project name and address, your name and phone number, and the type of inspection. Requests must be made no later than the day before the inspection is needed, by phone, Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.; voicemail requests are not accepted. The building permit card must be posted at the site in clear view and protected from the weather before any inspection.
Required inspections listed by the City include electrical rough-in and final and under-slab electrical. If the work does not meet code, or the inspector cannot get in, the City bills a $25.00 re-inspection fee, which must be paid before power is turned on and before a certificate of occupancy is issued. Planning and Zoning is at City Hall, 100 Main Street, and its listed phone number is 770-781-2024. More on each step is in the inspection guide.

Request quotesPermit timing and other notes
The electrical permit becomes void if the authorized work does not start within six months, or if work is suspended or abandoned for six months after it starts. The City's building permit application asks which utility serves the property, Georgia Power or Sawnee EMC, which matters for service upgrades and EV meters.
If you are not inside city limits, use the Forsyth County permit guide instead. For specific projects, see the panel upgrade guide, the EV charger guide and the generator guide. When you are ready, the form on this page lets independent local electricians contact you.
